It was in 2000, and by accident, that Puerto Rican photographer Manuel Vélez had his first encounter with a camera -today, his inseparable companion. He was looking for a vehicle that would allow him to constantly be near the sea and bodyboarding, a sport that he has been passionate about since his adolescence. Beyond bringing it closer to the sea in a different way, photography became the ideal way to share his vision of the world. He does not like labels. Whether showing the majesty of the natural settings of his native Puerto Rico, Iceland, Colombia, Italy or Panama; the intensity of a face, of a look, through a portrait, or the exquisiteness of a subject in a fashionable piece, he seeks to transmit beauty in its diverse manifestations and inspire those who observe his work to do whatever gives them fulfillment and happiness. He is an incessant adventure seeker. Avid practitioner of cycling, surfing, bodyboarding and climbing, he uses these interests and the places he visits when practicing them to take spectacular photos and show the world from his perspective. He is always thinking of tomorrow, of what’s next, of the new idea or adventure. This is what moves him and what makes silencing his mind an almost impossible task. Sports and nature help him to be present, to live the moment, and photography allows him to capture that moment lived, that is unique in time. For 13 years, he worked full time for some of the most important fashion and lifestyle publications from his island - among them, Imagen, Caras and ¡Hola! -, but it is from 2013, when he started freelancing, that his hunger for adventure and the time to give it life have taken his art to another level. He lives to discover new things and to share what he discovers. He is an adventurer from birth and a visual story-teller by vocation. He does not imagine one thing without the other. The symbiotic relationship between them is what makes his work so interesting, so unique. Today, the photographer also makes space to work on personal projects, gives life to clients’ visions through commercial campaigns for brands such as Bacardí, Heineken, Medalla, DirecTV, Plaza Las Américas and AT&T, and collaborates with the fashion magazine Mírame siempre.

En el año 2000, el fotógrafo puertorriqueño Manuel Vélez llegó a la cámara ­–hoy, su compañera inseparable– por accidente. Buscaba en ese momento un vehículo que le permitiera estar constantemente cerca del mar y el bodyboard, deporte que le apasiona desde su adolescencia. Más allá de acercarle al mar de forma diferente, la fotografía se convirtió en la manera idónea para compartir su visión de mundo. No le gustan las etiquetas. Ya sea mostrando la majestuosidad de los escenarios naturales de su natal Puerto Rico, Islandia, Colombia, Italia o Panamá; la intensidad de un rostro, de una mirada, a través de un retrato o la exquisitez de un sujeto enfundado en una pieza de moda, busca transmitir la belleza en sus manifestaciones diversas e inspirar a quien observe su trabajo para que haga lo que sea que le llene y dé felicidad. Es un buscador incesante de aventuras. Ávido practicante del ciclismo, el surf, el bodyboard y la escalada, utiliza estas inquietudes y los lugares que visita al practicarlas para realizar fotos espectaculares y mostrar el mundo desde su perspectiva. Siempre está pensando en mañana, en lo próximo, en la nueva idea o aventura. Esto es lo que lo mueve y lo que le hace casi imposible acallar su mente. Los deportes y la naturaleza le ayudan a estar presente, a vivirse el momento, y la fotografía le permite plasmar ese instante vivido, único en el tiempo. Durante 13 años, laboró a tiempo completo para algunas de las publicaciones de moda y estilos de vida más destacadas de su isla –entre esas, Imagen, Caras y ¡Hola!–, pero es desde 2013, cuando empezó a laborar de manera freelance, que su hambre de aventura y el tiempo para darle vida han llevado su arte a otro nivel. Vive para descubrir cosas nuevas y para compartir eso que descubre. Es un aventurero de nacimiento y un cuenta-historias visuales por vocación. No imagina una cosa sin la otra. La relación simbiótica entre ambas es lo que hace de sus trabajos unos tan interesantes, tan únicos. Hoy, el fotógrafo también saca el espacio para trabajar proyectos personales, da vida a las visiones de clientes a través de campañas comerciales para marcas como Bacardí, Heineken, Medalla, DirecTV, Plaza Las Américas y AT&T, y colabora con la revista de moda Mírame siempre.
